What is cold water immersion therapy?
Cold water immersion therapy, also known as cold water therapy or cold hydrotherapy, involves immersing the body in cold water to promote physical and mental health benefits. It is commonly used for recovery, reducing muscle soreness, and improving overall well-being.
What is the difference between a cold plunge and cold water immersion therapy?
A cold plunge is a specific type of cold water immersion therapy that typically involves immersing the entire body in cold water, often at temperatures below 13°C (55°F). Cold water immersion therapy, on the other hand, encompasses a broader range of techniques and may include partial immersion or localized cold water applications.
What are the benefits of cold water immersion therapy?
Cold water immersion therapy offers several benefits, such as:
- Extremely beneficial for mental health
- Can help relieve auto-immune symptoms (chronic pain and inflammation)
- Reduction of inflammation and swelling in muscles and joints
- Accelerated recovery from intense physical exercise or sports activities
- Improved circulation and oxygenation of the body
- Enhanced mental alertness and mood
- Increased metabolism and calorie burn
- Relief from muscle soreness and pain
- Improved immune system function
- Extremely beneficial for mental health
How long should a cold water immersion therapy session last?
The duration of a cold water immersion therapy session can vary depending on individual preference and tolerance. Beginners often start with shorter durations, typically around 1-5 minutes, and gradually increase it over time. Some individuals may prefer longer sessions, up to 15 minutes. It is important to listen to your body and avoid staying in the cold water for an excessive amount of time.
Is cold water immersion therapy safe?
Cold water immersion therapy can be safe when practiced correctly. However, it is essential to take precautions and ensure you are in good health before starting. If you have any underlying medical conditions or concerns, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. Additionally, always follow safety guidelines, avoid extremely cold temperatures, and monitor your body's response during the therapy session.
Who can benefit from cold water immersion therapy?
Cold water immersion therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including those recovering from substance abuse, those struggling with mental health, individuals seeking pain relief, athletes, fitness enthusiasts, those recovering from intense workouts, and people looking to improve their overall well-being. However, individuals with certain medical conditions, such as cardiovascular issues or Raynaud's disease, should consult with a healthcare professional before starting cold water immersion therapy.
How often should I incorporate cold water immersion therapy into my routine?
The frequency of cold water immersion therapy sessions depends on your goals, preferences, and individual response. Some people may benefit from daily sessions, while others find two to three sessions per week sufficient. It is important to listen to your body and give yourself enough time to recover between sessions. Experiment with different frequencies to determine what works best for you.
Can cold water immersion therapy be combined with other therapies or exercise?
Yes, cold water immersion therapy can be combined with other therapies and exercises. Many individuals incorporate it into their post-workout routine to enhance recovery. It can also be complemented with contrast therapy (alternating between hot and cold) or used in conjunction with stretching, meditation, or breathing exercises. Always ensure proper safety precautions and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any specific concerns.
Are there risks or precautions associated with cold water immersion therapy?
While cold water immersion therapy is generally safe, there are a few risks and precautions to consider:
- If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant you should not participate in cold water immersion therapy.
- If you have cardiovascular disease or epilepsy you should not participate in cold water immersion therapy.
- Risk of hypothermia if the water temperature is too cold and duration is too long.
- If you have a pre-existing medical condition you should consult with your physician prior to use.

Why do I need a tub and a chiller? Can't I just build my own and use ice?
You do not need a tub and a chiller. However, when you’re an active cold water enthusiast the DIY options get pretty old, pretty quick. The problems we faced were consistent enough that we needed something portable, clean, consistently cold (without ice), and most importantly saved our time. That’s where the Embrace Bundle comes in. It checks all those boxes and makes your experience more than worth it.
How can I get the water to the temperature I want?
Our chiller is super easy to use with a digital interface where the temperature can be set manually or through the chillers app.
How often should I clean my cold plunge?
Most of the hard cleaning work is done by the ozone generator and filter. We suggest that the filter be inspected and cleaned (if required) every 1-2 weeks, depending on usage. Clean the filter by running it under moderately high pressure until clean. For optimal performance replace the water and filter every 2-3 months, or as required if usage is more frequent and water clarity is undesirable.
Can I use my cold plunge outside?
Yes, absolutely. That’s where we use ours! The tub and chiller can stay outside down to -10°C (14°F). The chiller has low heating technology to keep the water from freezing when the ambient temperature is below freezing. This is active while the chiller is continuously running. If the chiller will not be running continuously we recommend keeping it above 5°C(41°F) The chiller and plug should be protected from excessive water and heavy rain.
